Message from the Chair

Welcome to Civil and Environmental Engineering at Howard University!

Civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines and was among the first to be included at Howard University in 1907. In 1911, the four-year civil engineering program was fully developed at Howard University. Since that time, our program has grown significantly, as we now offer degrees leading to the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.

Civil and environmental engineers are critical in addressing some of the more pervasive issues confronting our society today. From addressing climate change and designing sustainable communities to rebuilding the nation’s crumbling infrastructure, civil engineers are called upon to provide design solutions to these and other societal problems.

At Howard University, we provide a world-class, hands-on education in the five main sub-disciplines in civil engineering: structures, transportation, water resources, geotechnical and environmental engineering. Our students understand the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork and have a deep technical background to support innovative thinking and creative problem-solving. We encourage our students to be aware of social justice issues related to engineering and to incorporate a global perspective in their designs.

Graduates of our program proceed to be leaders in the field. Many of our alum are successful business owners, project managers, educators and thought leaders. Once you come to Howard University, you are forever family.
