Howard University’s Bachelor of Science degree program in Civil Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.

Undergraduate Program Educational Objectives

The Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) are to produce graduates:

I. Who enter the civil engineering practice, working independently or as members and leaders of multi-disciplinary teams.
II. Some of whom successfully complete graduate and professional studies or professional development opportunities, including pursuit of professional registration.

Undergraduate Program Student Outcomes

The program uses an outcomes-based assessment process to determine its success in preparing students for entry into the profession. The student outcomes are those specified by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, Inc. in the Criteria for Accrediting Engineering Programs. These outcomes are listed below:

1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
2. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

Sophomores Rutledge and Abraham Publish in Peer-Reviewed Scientific Journal Diamond and Related Materials

Civil and Environmental Engineering Sophomores Jade Rutledge and Brandon Abraham recently published a paper titled “Mechanical Properties of C3N Nanotubes” in the peer-reviewed scientific journal in materials science Diamond and Related Materials. Rutledge and Abraham worked in collaboration with Civil and Environmental Engineering Ph.D. student Hamid Ghasemi under the mentorship of Civil and Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Hessam Yazdani. Howard University Receives $570K DURIP Grant for Interdisciplinary Research and Education

Civil and Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Hessam Yazdani, Ph.D. has received a $570,000 grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) to support research and education in advanced materials, water treatment and environmental chemistry, orthotics and prosthetics, and traumatic brain injury.
